A conservation scheme to restore an eighteenth century bridge in the grounds of Chiswick House in West London has been commended in the annual Historic Bridges and Infrastructure Awards organised by the Institution of Civil Engineers.

The Grade I listed, elegant stone bridge was built for the 5th Duke of Devonshire as part of extensive remodelling of William Kent’s Palladian villa and gardens in 1774. The bridge spans a lake and is attributed to James Wyatt, the architect for the new extensions added to Chiswick House by the Duke.

As part of a comprehensive programme of works to restore the gardens at Chiswick House, conservation engineers at Gifford and conservation architects Dannatt Johnson jointly designed repairs to the bridge.

The bridge was in poor condition after long exposure to the weather, pollution and lack of maintenance. The restoration project undertook minimum intervention to prevent further decay of the fabric, consolidated the integrity of the structure and revitalised the appearance of the bridge, allowing the original design concept to be fully appreciated.

The wider programme included an extensive restoration of the Camellia House in the grounds of Chiswick House as well as the design and building of a stunning new café.

Network Rail has commissioned bridge engineering experts at Gifford to develop preliminary manuals...

Network Rail has commissioned bridge engineering experts at Gifford to develop preliminary manuals setting out 100 year maintenance programmes for four key rail bridges on the network due to their scale and complexity. This is in addition to Network Rail's usual inspection and maintenance regime.

All four are 1960s and 1970s built post-tensioned concrete structures and the Gifford team is meticulously studying original construction documents to formulate appropriate site investigation, monitoring and testing programmes to ensure the reliability of the bridges throughout the rest of the century.

Two of the bridges carry the West Coast Mainline over the M6 north and south of Penrith in Cumbria and two carry lines over the M56 in Cheshire.

Jeanette Hunter, Principal Engineer, said: “Assessing all the original British Rail construction documentation is vital to understand the risks associated with the form and method of construction of these post-tensioned structures and to ensure that thorough investigations and maintenance programmes can be carried out.”

A project by a team of energy and sustainability experts at Gifford to show how existing suburban housing stock can be made much more energy efficient has won Government funding for further development.

“A whole house low carbon solution for everyday living” is an exercise being carried out by the Gifford Sustainability Team led by Glen Irwin at a 1960s built semi-detached house in Harrow, north west London. It shows that energy saving measures such as whole house ventilation, solar heating and innovative retrofit insulation can dramatically reduce carbon emissions of the existing housing stock.

Ultimately these techniques and improvements could be refined and rolled out across the country in a cost effective ‘kit of solutions’ to help the UK meet its 80% carbon reduction targets by 2050.

Gifford is leading the team with Harrow Council as client and Kier carrying out the works. After the development of the outline scheme in Phase 1, the team has now been appointed to the Phase 2 retrofit stage, after which it will install energy monitoring systems in conjunction with the Energy Saving Trust.

Initiatives to find ways of improving the existing housing stock in the UK have the backing of Lord Drayson, Science Minister in the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills and John Healey, the Housing Minister in a £17 million programme managed by the Technology Strategy Board entitled “Retrofit for the Future.”

Gifford has been appointed by Atkins to design the gantry superstructures for two important managed...

Gifford has been appointed by Atkins to design the gantry superstructures for two important managed motorway projects – on the Bradford-Leeds section of the M62 between junctions 25 and 30, and for all the approaches to the M4/M5 interchange near Bristol.

Both projects are part of the Highways Agency’s schemes for managing motorway traffic using variable speed limits and hard shoulder running, to improve heavy traffic flows and motorway safety and reduce pollution.

Gifford is the UK’s leading designer of motorway gantries developing lighter-looking, less cluttered gantries that take advantage of more efficient “plug and play” electronics and the reduced need for maintenance. Atkins is the scheme designer on behalf of the Highways Agency for both projects.

The M62 project requires 35 sign/signal portal gantries spanning across the motorway and 12 cantilever sign gantries located to the side of the motorway providing driver information. The M4/M5 project requires 46 portal and six cantilever gantries.

Simon Benfield, Technical Director at Gifford, said: “We have been evolving our current design range of motorway gantries to make them more efficient and economic to fabricate and erect. The structures are lighter-looking which emphasises the signs and signals they support, making it easier for drivers to take in the information being relayed to them.”

Two Gifford engineers, Hayley Maxwell and Jessica Robinson, are travelling to Nakaseeta in rural Uganda, to see the first rural classrooms being built to their award-winning design.

They are part of a team of young engineers at Gifford who, in their spare time, developed a sustainable design for a rural classroom that can be built by local communities and used to create an entire school.

Their design won the worldwide ‘Open Architecture Competition’ organised by the US-based Architecture for Humanity through the Open Architecture Network. It was prepared for an international non-profit organisation, Building Tomorrow, which intends to use the design as a blueprint for building classrooms for less than $3,000 each.

Hayley and Jessica have both been fundraising to help pay for their journey to Uganda which is also being sponsored by Gifford and by Specialist Construction Products, a distributor of specialist, leading brand construction materials. Hayley has also received a QUEST Travel Award from the Institution of Civil Engineers for the trip.

“We’re really excited to be going to Uganda,” says Hayley, “and seeing our classroom design become a reality. This first project is being built at Nakaseeta which is some 40km north-west of the capital, Kampala. We will develop our ideas with the local engineers and community, and work with them to provide buildable, innovative solutions that can help with classroom designs across sub-Saharan Africa.”

A one day training course held on February 17 2010 at Oxford University’s Computing Services...

A one day training course held on February 17 2010 at Oxford University’s Computing Services Department

A new Highways Agency standard, HD 45, was published in November 2009 replacing HA 216. The new standard incorporates a new method for assessing the risks to surface waters from routine runoff. This new method centres around the Highways Agency Water Risk Assessment Tool (HAWRAT). The purpose of this one day training course was to guide users through this new assessment process and provide an update on other changes to HA 216.

To encourage informed use of HAWRAT following its November 2009 release, the course was run at cost and the fee for attendance was only £135 plus VAT.
