Chichester City Walls Conservation Management Plan
Gifford Archaeology was commissioned by Chichester District Council to undertake a multi-disciplinary and integrated Conservation Management Plan (CMP) for Chichester’s nationally important City Walls. These were built in the Roman period and significant parts of the Roman walls survive. Other sections are Saxon and Medieval in date. Altogether this is one of the most complete and important walled enceinte in the UK.
The expert team put together by Gifford to carry out this project included cultural heritage specialists, conservation engineers and ecologists. As part of the CMP this team produced an Access Plan, Audience Development Plan, Training Plan, Ten Year Maintenance Schedule and Heritage Impact Assessment. An oral history project was also instigated.
