A34/M4 Junction 13, Chieveley Survey
Gifford Survey Section provided pre-construction assistance for Gifford WSP, the client’s designers of the project. The client required confirmatory carriageway levels along 4km of the M4, this was achieved with reflectorless instrumentation without the need for running lane closures. Additional topographical surveys were also provided to develop the preliminary design, and in particular for a replacement footbridge to allow for widening of the M4 slip roads.
Pre construction setting out was undertaken in critical design areas and archaeological investigations.
Notable Features
The junction at Chieveley previously consisted of the only roundabout on the A34 from the M3 at Winchester to the M40 North of Oxford. The improvement removed the roundabout and provided a dual two lane through route for the A34, six multi-span bridges and major maintenance works on the M4 were also part of the scheme.
The project was constructed by Costain on a Design and Build contract at a cost of approximately £38m.
