Twin Sails Crossing, Poole Harbour
The lifting bridge in Poole Harbour is an historic landmark which forms a critical transport link at the edge of Poole town centre. It is a heavily trafficked crossing which conveys traffic from the nearby ferry terminal as well as the residential areas of Hamworthy and Upton. During the summer months when boat traffic along the Backwater Channel is at a peak, the bridge can block traffic for up to 25 minutes in every hour. The need for a carefully designed alternative crossing is of vital importance to the local area.
A second crossing known as the 'Twin Sails' is now under construction to alleviate the strain on the local transport network.
Gifford Transportation has worked closely with the Borough of Poole and other departments within Gifford in order to prepare the technical annex (Traffic and Transport) of the Environmental Statement that formed a major component of this development proposal.
In addition to this, Gifford Transportation produced the transportation element of the Environmental Assessment: a further key component of the proposal.
