The use of Revit, NavisWorks and the whole suite of BIM modelling tools has helped us to streamline our project delivery and speed up the time from concept to on-site information releases.  Key team benefits have been found in communication, decision-making, accuracy, site coordination and inter-office working.  The ability to build 3D models, fly around these, take slices through them etc. has also had a dramatic effect on boosting team morale and enthusiasm.

But whilst these benefits are important within Gifford, they are far outweighed by the benefits to clients, developers and projects overall.  BIM delivers a consistent, collaborative design approach which, by reducing the construction time also helps to reduce capital and operating costs. And because the design approach offers greater accuracy, defects are minimised and reworking is diminished. By providing accurate 3D models our technical staff can help clients see the finished structure - from any angle - even before a single foundation stone is laid. Combine these systems with our construction engineering experience and Gifford is able to offer greater predictability regarding time and cost and help deliver superior returns on construction investment.

Laser scanned surveys

Our BIM techniques can also be linked with laser scanning technology to assist in the refurbishment of existing buildings. We have been using terrestrial laser scanning for over 10 years but whilst the technology is mature, the development of applications for the captured data is relatively new. Laser scanning enables millions - sometimes billions - of measurements of a particular environment to be made. These xyz points, known as point clouds, can then be used for different digital applications such as 3D geometry and mathematical models.

Laser scanned surveying is a much faster alternative to conventional techniques (for example, it immediately overcomes difficulties associated with restricted access and, because high level areas can be captured from ground level, it eliminates the need for ladders or scaffolding). The scan records everything; nothing’s lost or missed so there is never a need for repeat visits.
