With established expertise in the creation of engineered structures and buildings, Gifford is uniquely placed to provide a seamless advice service. Elements range from desktop analysis of waste streams through to the actual design of infrastructure required to realise the objectives of earlier strategic work. Our clients therefore benefit from advice which is based on an understanding of both the nature of built infrastructure and of the challenges of waste management.

Since April 2008 Site Waste Management Plans (SWMPs) have been required on all construction projects over £300,000 in value, placing a further legislative burden on developers. By combining SWMPs with development waste strategies our specialists are able to achieve compliance and frequently demonstrate positive economic and environmental benefits to both developers and authorities.

Other key areas of Gifford expertise include:

  • Advising councils on long-term strategies for waste management, collection logistics, joint waste authorities and public engagement
  • Developing business cases for the procurement of waste management infrastructure
  • Establishing waste strategies for housing/building projects – typically required at planning stage these enable clients to demonstrate their commitment to waste minimisation and best practice in wastes management
  • Providing technical advice on the provision of major waste management and treatment infrastructure
  • Supplying training in waste management; particularly updating clients on recent developments in waste legislation

Capabilities include:

  • Outline business case preparation
  • Waste management plans
  • Waste strategies for public bodies
